|Nominee Achievement Brief|
Ambassador Esserman was she was Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, a high-level appointee of President Clinton, where her portfolio included developing U.S. policy with respect to international organizations, such as the World Trade Organization, as well as with India, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. While others focused on the broad macroeconomic effect of trade policies and agreements, she focused on benefits to labor, women, the poor and disadvantaged. A special area of her interest were trade initiatives to advance growth in the developing world, especially in India and Africa. I was privileged to join her as she forged a public-private trade and commercial partnership between the U.S. and South Africa with the purpose of promoting enduring commercial benefits to South African women.
